I’ve been traveling independently since 1972 and soon to release a second guidebook on the Independent Travel Spectrum. Please share this podcast with your parents, loved ones and future travelers, so you make their trips the very best, like Travel-best! In this episode: The FAQ. Can you explain why sulfur from hot springs is good for your skin? You asked me about the rotten egg smell. Episode special edition is on California Beaches from Los Angeles and Malibu (part 5) Today’s Lessons Learned- Soaked shoes and sneakers Today’s travel Advice: Fly nonstop whenever possible. FAQ: How is sulfur good for skin as I travel? What does that rotten eggs smell mean? Answer: Hydrogen sulfide smells like rotten eggs. You may call it, “The Hot Springs Smell,” and it is ok for humans because it's natural. Not all hot springs have it to the same extent, there are some that don't have the hot springs smell at all. Sulfur helps dry out the surface of your skin to help absorb excess oil (sebum) that may contribute to acne breakouts. It also dries out dead skin cells to help unclog your pores. There are different varieties of sulfur, including green sulfur, white sulfur, and iron sulfur. Seek medical advice if you have further questions. • In Beitou, Taiwan Hot Springs, this was once the largest hot springs spa in Asia. • In Japan’s Hokkaido’s most popular spa town Hell Valley, black sulfur waters provide minerals to thermal bathers. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/jigokudani-hell-valley • Moccasin Springs in Hot Springs, South Dakota is a treat. https://www.moccasinsprings.com/ https://www.foxnews.com/health/sulfur-springs-to-soak-or-not-to-soak https://water-research.net/index.php/sulfur Today’s Episode special edition is on California Beaches from Los Angeles to Malibu (part 5) https://www.californiabeaches.com/restaurant/gladstones/ https://gladstones.com/ https://beaches.lacounty.gov/find-a-beach/ We will start with the Isadore B. Dockweiler State Beach, north of Manhattan Beach. https://beaches.lacounty.gov/dockweiler-beach/ It’s close to LAX, the largest airport in the region, so you will hear a lot of plane landings and takeoffs, but you’ll also find parking, showers, and plenty of beach activities like picnics, swimming and biking here. It’s managed by the county of Los Angeles, even though it’s a state beach of California. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=617 The next stop is Will Rogers State Beach, with sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. Three miles of beach frontage makes for a large beach area in Los Angeles. There’s a bike path and walkway. There is limited access for disabled, but you can check on that for all parks: access@parks.ca.gov. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=625 access@parks.ca.gov Sunset Point Beach is next to the north, in Will Rogers State Park at the northern section. LA county beach. Pay to park. Guard at gate. Volleyball. $8 to 15 a day. Private homes. Private parking lot. Expensive. Fire damage nearby. The geography changes here a bit, and oceans are south facing instead of west. Topanga Co Beach is the first main beach in Malibu. You can swim, fish and scuba dive. Restrooms and showers. Las Tunas County beach is quieter, and you can fish or scuba dive easily. Fewer crowds are around, so enjoy that. Malibu Surfrider, a LA county beach has a lagoon and pier. 22 acres of wetlands, a mile of beach and fishing from the pier. Swimming is limited here. Park in the lot or on the street or take the bus. https://beaches.lacounty.gov/malibu-surfrider-beach/ Malibu Beaches a total of 21 miles of coastline. http://www.malibutimes.com/malibu_life/article_0b758974-30ee-11e3-8d50-0019bb2963f4.html Today’s Lessons Learned- Soaked sneakers My sneakers got soaked while traveling. My feet were unhappy. If your shoes get wet and you need to dry them out, unlace them and they will dry faster. One tip I learned later is to use a hair dryer. I should have bought a new pair of sneakers on that trip. That’s a souvenir I would have treasure with every step. Today’s travel Advice: Fly nonstop whenever possible. Take non-stop flights when you can. Always check in 24 hours in advance of your flights. Get to the airport 30 minutes before it’s suggested. You will cut your stress by a lot. In this episode, the FAQ:  Can AI really help me travel?    Today’s Destination: Cabrillo National Monument Experience Part 1   Today’s Misstep- Mark Twain jokes about European tour guides in his travel books.   Travel Advice: If you are interested in travel and do as you listen here, why not purchase a guide that answers most of your questions in one place?    FAQ: Can really AI help me travel?    Answer: AI is a great tool kit for travel. Yes, but be sure to check for accuracy and hallucinations. You will also find bias. But you can start using your phone today to ask about some of the questions you have at this moment. “Do I need to bring an umbrella to England?” That’s a question you already are asking your Alexa, Siri, or other smart device. I just asked that. The answer was that it’s not raining right now in the UK. That did not answer my question, but it helped.  So don’t limit yourself and keep asking questions. Be sure...

It can be oppressive.   FAQ: The level of technology and security has stepped up for travel and entertainment. How do I manage it as a senior citizen in a very busy world?   Answer:    There is a growing level of distrust in today’s environment. For some venues, you can no longer use a screenshot of a QR code to access a ticket, so it must be a live link if you don’t have the paper ticket. If you are not on Wi-Fi, you may have trouble accessing the venue, like I did in July at the Symphony, where we used handwritten paper tickets.  The Crowdstrike tech shutdown of computers in July 2024, with thousands of airline flights canceled, was a peek into what could be an even lo...

Leg and Ankle Stretches: Sitting stretches are perfect for waiting in lines or resting. Flex and extend your ankles, or gently lift and lower your legs. Back and Shoulderstretches: Do these to prevent hunching over bags or phones. Raise your arms and clasp your hands above your head, then lean side to side. Wall Push-Ups: Quick and easy in a hotel room, these push-ups are great for keeping your upper body toned. Balance Exercises: Practicing standing on one foot helps with stability and balance and is useful for navigating uneven terrain. Adding small moments of movement througho...
