Can you explain why sulfur from hot springs is good for your skin? You asked me about the rotten egg smell. Episode special edition is on California Beaches from Los Angeles and Malibu (part 5) Today’s Lessons Learned- Soaked shoes and sneakers Today’s travel Advice: Fly nonstop whenever possible. FAQ: How is sulfur good for skin as I travel? What does that rotten eggs smell mean? Answer: Hydrogen sulfide smells like rotten eggs. You may call it, “The Hot Springs Smell,” and it is ok for humans because it's natural. Not all hot springs have it to the same extent, there are some that don't have the hot springs smell at all. Sulfur helps dry out the surface of your skin to help absorb excess oil (sebum) that may contribute to acne breakouts. It also dries out dead skin cells to help unclog your pores. There are different varieties of sulfur, including green sulfur, white sulfur, and iron sulfur. Seek medical advice if you have further questions. • In Beitou, Taiwan Hot Springs, this was once the largest hot springs spa in Asia. • In Japan’s Hokkaido’s most popular spa town Hell Valley, black sulfur waters provide minerals to thermal bathers. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/jigokudani-hell-valley • Moccasin Springs in Hot Springs, South Dakota is a treat. https://www.moccasinsprings.com/ https://www.foxnews.com/health/sulfur-springs-to-soak-or-not-to-soak https://water-research.net/index.php/sulfur Today’s Episode special edition is on California Beaches from Los Angeles to Malibu (part 5) https://www.californiabeaches.com/restaurant/gladstones/ https://gladstones.com/ https://beaches.lacounty.gov/find-a-beach/ We will start with the Isadore B. Dockweiler State Beach, north of Manhattan Beach. https://beaches.lacounty.gov/dockweiler-beach/ It’s close to LAX, the largest airport in the region, so you will hear a lot of plane landings and takeoffs, but you’ll also find parking, showers, and plenty of beach activities like picnics, swimming and biking here. It’s managed by the county of Los Angeles, even though it’s a state beach of California. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=617 The next stop is Will Rogers State Beach, with sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. Three miles of beach frontage makes for a large beach area in Los Angeles. There’s a bike path and walkway. There is limited access for disabled, but you can check on that for all parks: access@parks.ca.gov. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=625 access@parks.ca.gov Sunset Point Beach is next to the north, in Will Rogers State Park at the northern section. LA county beach. Pay to park. Guard at gate. Volleyball. $8 to 15 a day. Private homes. Private parking lot. Expensive. Fire damage nearby. The geography changes here a bit, and oceans are south facing instead of west. Topanga Co Beach is the first main beach in Malibu. You can swim, fish and scuba dive. Restrooms and showers. Las Tunas County beach is quieter, and you can fish or scuba dive easily. Fewer crowds are around, so enjoy that. Malibu Surfrider, a LA county beach has a lagoon and pier. 22 acres of wetlands, a mile of beach and fishing from the pier. Swimming is limited here. Park in the lot or on the street or take the bus. https://beaches.lacounty.gov/malibu-surfrider-beach/ Malibu Beaches a total of 21 miles of coastline. http://www.malibutimes.com/malibu_life/article_0b758974-30ee-11e3-8d50-0019bb2963f4.html Today’s Lessons Learned- Soaked sneakers My sneakers got soaked while traveling. My feet were unhappy. If your shoes get wet and you need to dry them out, unlace them and they will dry faster. One tip I learned later is to use a hair dryer. I should have bought a new pair of sneakers on that trip. That’s a souvenir I would have treasure with every step. Today’s travel Advice: Fly nonstop whenever possible. Take non-stop flights when you can. Always check in 24 hours in advance of your flights. Get to the airport 30 minutes before it’s suggested. You will cut your stress by a lot. I want to travel independently, does that makes sense? Written by: Lizandra Jimenez Rodriguez When traveling becomes a great passion, you usually keep a bucket list framed at your desk or in the lock screen of your phone. You never stop planning or deciding when, where, and how to get to the next place. There are tons of ways to travel, however, independent travel has been always a popular one for those seeking adventure, exploring on their own, or simply trying to get away from the traditional and superficial (for some) tourist routine. A myth we need to forget is that independent travel is not all about backpacking in Europe or climbing the Everest; in fact, it can be done in many ways including different levels of budget and luxury. Also, independent travel can be done solo or with an affinity group with a particularly crafted itinerary. This makes it very different from escorted traveling of course.
