In this episode: FAQ : A reader asks, I recently booked a trip and the airfare included no carry on bag. How can I manage to travel without a carry on?

Not every trip can be managed without luggage. There will be circumstances when you need to bring many changes of clothes on your trip. In that case you will have to pay a fee to most airlines for this service. Southwest Airlines still allows two free bags with your ticket.

If you don't want to pay those fees, you can consolidate your luggage into a small bag that goes underneath the seat in front of you. Check with the airline for the exact dimensions of that personal item and do not exceed that.  You can vacuum pack your clothes so they shrink into a ziplock bag. You can use a metal straw to remove the air in those bags. I traveled for more than a month with a small personal item only. I recommend you bring packing cubes and line them up vertically in your personal item bag.
