Best of North Dakota

Dr. Mary Travelbest’s Solo Travel North Dakota

In this episode: FAQ is How far in advance should I book my travel?

The destination is North Dakota. The lesson learned is carry a flashlight and the tip is how to stay awake while driving.

FAQ: When asked, how far in advance should I book my travel, I had to dig into my expert opinions for some data. The domestic trips should be booked one to two months in advance and international trips are best planned even further in advance, especially if you are traveling on specific dates or for a holiday period. Those are when flights are highly sought after and as you know.

Today’s Independent Destination- Fargo, North Dakota

The touristy thing to visit in Fargo is the Hjemkomst Center, a scenic museum complex that features a replica of a Norwegian Viking ship and a wooden stave church. The name means Homecoming, which represents the Nordic people.

The Plains Art Museum is one of the most visited places in Fargo. Other popular sites in North Dakota are the Teddy Roosevelt National Park, and the National Buffalo Museum.

Painted Canyon Visitor Center will be a stop on my next trip. As you would imagine, there are plenty of buffalo and camping here to enjoy.

Other things to do in the area are visit the many parks, museums, art galleries and mix with the locals. I found many university campuses to walk around, such as North Dakota State University and five others. It may be the last US state that many people visit, because it’s just not on the way to many other places. It’s worthwhile to visit and learn of this great state.

Today’s Lesson Learned- Carry a flashlight

At night, it’s hard to see in the dark. If you’re tent camping, you may need to have a handy flashlight if you need to use the restroom facilities. You can find some that are hands free, too. That saved me from tripping in the dark times. Keeping a flashlight with batteries or using the flashlight on your smartphone can save you from tripping or falling, and that’s a lesson learned. See the notes for the Best Flashlights and how to select one.

RIP Dean Alphonso Buell

Celebrating the life of Dean Alphonso Buell in April, 2012 with his mom and two friends. Dr. Travelbest is priviledged to know Raquel Giraldez, mother of the deceased, as she was the designer and illustrator and most travelled friend of Dr. Travelbest in 1993 as the book was being written and published. Dean was involved with the editorial, even though he was a youngster at the time. Thanks, Dean, for sharing your mom so that Dr. Travelbest could teach others about Independent Travel. Speaking of travel, this is the view from the front yard of Raquel's home in Buellton, CA. The mountains in the distant background are picture postcard on this memorable day, right near the 101. (Photos: top: view from Raquels, bottom: center, Raquel and right, Rosanna Figuerola (sp?) at the Celebration of Dean's 24 years on the earth.) There were so many stars that night, we knew that Dean was watching us from above with his new friends.

Please share this podcast with your mom, aunts, and friends. I appreciate your feedback.   I’ve returned from a 90-day trip around the globe to every time zone on the planet. My mission is world peace through cultural exchange. I was sustainable when I could by using local transportation, buses, and trains. I was solo, carrying a small backpack, called a “personal item” that fit under the seat in front of me on a plane.   In this episode, FAQ is : Where was your next favorite place on your 90-day trip? .
