Show Notes: Special Favorite Travel Movies Issue

Dr. Mary Travelbest’s Special Favorite Travel Movies for staying home.

In this episode: The FAQ is what to do when you are stranded and feeling alone?
The destination is your home video studio. Staying at home film destinations are top movies picks about travel, the mistake is traveling with nail clippers, and the tip is: packing like a pro, including a respirator mask.

FAQ:  What to do if you get stranded? If I am traveling alone or with a friend, and we become lost, or totally alone, what should we do?

Answer: In today’s connected world, you’re never alone, but you can do the following things if you find yourself out on the streets.
1)      If you can’t find a place to stay, here are some ideas, go to the outskirts of town, or the next town over and find a place there.
2)      Go to a local pub and talk to the bartender and see if he has any suggestions,
3)      Go to a church and see if they know anyone who will take you in for a night.
4)      Find a YWCA or YMCA or youth hostel and ask where you should go. They usually have a list of backups if they are full.
5)      Lastly, be flexible and travel light. You may need to stash your suitcase with the concierge in a hotel for the night, so you will be easier to accept as a guest.
6)     You can always go to the local police station, and sleep in the lobby if they let you, depending on the city or jurisdiction. Early the next morning, you need to find your way again.
7)    With your smartphone, you should never feel stranded. You are just a call away from someone who loves you.

Today’s Destination is your home movie screen.

Out of Africa, Best picture in 1986, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Some of the best beauty scenes from Africa. It inspired me to go visit there a couple of years later.

National Lampoon’s Vacation from 1983 has Chevy Chase, and a star filled cast. Watch for a good laugh. Family friendly, even with the grandma scene. One for fun. It reminds me of our old station wagon, the Country Squire that traveled across the US in the 70’s.

Murder on the Orient Express an Agatha Christie story, the most famous writer of suspense, Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot, not just an ordinary mystery (watch the 1974 original and compare to newer one 2017) The original stars Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, etc.

Eat, Pray, Love, (2010)  Beautiful cinematography. Julia Roberts is Liz Gilbert, a modern woman on a mission to explore the world while discovering and connecting with her inner self. Italy, India, Bali, Indonesia. This film can lift you up, which we need more of right now in these difficult times.

Crazy Rich Asians, superrich surprise hit in 2018. Travel to Singapore to meet a new family. Real life locations are shot in full color and sound. Is this country on your Bucket List after watching this movie?

North by Northwest- Hitchcock is a master with scenes from South Dakota’s Mt Rushmore to the crop duster scene. Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, and is quite the mystery.

Casablanca, from 1941 starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, One famous line is “Play it Again Sam” - Covers Morocco, northern Africa, and has some great lines and stars. What a love story, too.

Forrest Gump. He travels around the USA, Run Forrest Run. Scenes across America. From July 6, 1994. Jenny was his forever girlfriend. Some things never change.

Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck visiting in Italy, Trevi Fountains, real-life locations. Dream of Italy. This may make you want to visit Italy after the Covid 19 is over. Another good movie about Italy is Under the Tuscan Sun. Read the book first if you can, then see the film.

Two for the Road (1967)

The Trip (2010)

Up (2009)

The Way (2010)

Movies not to see and will NOT make you want to travel:
Brokedown Palace
Midnight Express.

Today’s Mistake-Traveling with Nail Clippers

Don’t be like me! Bring clippers only if you ship your luggage, not if you carry on. Buy new clippers when you get to your destination.

Today’s Travel Advice-Pack like a pro, small things
The little things you pack may matter: a tiny sewing kit, dental floss, comb, emery board nail file, allergy pills, two ounces of drinking water, lip gloss, ear buds, advil, vitamins, and last but not least, it’s now recommended you bring a cotton respirator mask, and the best is the N-95 if you’re going anywhere, especially if you are at any risk for illness.

RIP Dean Alphonso Buell

Celebrating the life of Dean Alphonso Buell in April, 2012 with his mom and two friends. Dr. Travelbest is priviledged to know Raquel Giraldez, mother of the deceased, as she was the designer and illustrator and most travelled friend of Dr. Travelbest in 1993 as the book was being written and published. Dean was involved with the editorial, even though he was a youngster at the time. Thanks, Dean, for sharing your mom so that Dr. Travelbest could teach others about Independent Travel. Speaking of travel, this is the view from the front yard of Raquel's home in Buellton, CA. The mountains in the distant background are picture postcard on this memorable day, right near the 101. (Photos: top: view from Raquels, bottom: center, Raquel and right, Rosanna Figuerola (sp?) at the Celebration of Dean's 24 years on the earth.) There were so many stars that night, we knew that Dean was watching us from above with his new friends.

I want to travel independently, does that makes sense? Written by: Lizandra Jimenez Rodriguez When traveling becomes a great passion, you usually keep a bucket list framed at your desk or in the lock screen of your phone. You never stop planning or deciding when, where, and how to get to the next place. There are tons of ways to travel, however, independent travel has been always a popular one for those seeking adventure, exploring on their own, or simply trying to get away from the traditional and superficial (for some) tourist routine. A myth we need to forget is that independent travel is not all about backpacking in Europe or climbing the Everest; in fact, it can be done in many ways including different levels of budget and luxury. Also, independent travel can be done solo or with an affinity group with a particularly crafted itinerary. This makes it very different from escorted traveling of course. Companies have understood how escorted traveling is not for everyone and to
